A 22-year-old woman wearing a fancy dress costume was seriously sexually assaulted after celebrating her friend's birthday in Hartlepool centre.

The woman was attacked at Rossmere Way in the early hours of Sunday.

The victim took a taxi from Church Street and was dropped off near the Travellers Rest on Stockton Road. The woman was taken to the University Hospital of Hartlepool for observation.

Police are urging the driver of the taxi to come forward as it is thought he may hold vital information.

Officers are also appealing for witnesses.
